Yerushalayim Shel Zahav

Naomi Shemer wrote Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold) in the spring of 1967 as a poetic yearning for the reunification of Jerusalem. It was published three weeks before the Six-Day War. When the paratroopers reached the Temple Mount on the third day of fighting, the song burst forth from their lips. Jerusalem was reunited after two thousand years of loss. Naomi wrote a final verse expressing the joy and gratitude of a nation that, finally, was whole.

For Israelis and Jews everywhere, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav is a national treasure, and its emotional resonance is second only to Hatikvah. With great joy, Shir Harmony performed this song for a “Yom Ha’atzmaut 75” celebratory concert at Beth Emeth Synagogue on April 26, 2023.

Wonderful World

Life this past year has been one of despair, fear, loneliness and much grief. Indeed, for the family of Shir Harmony, where music is our passion, life can feel especially hollow knowing how dangerous it is to come together to sing at this time. Still, we are resilient as we create beautiful music, connected in spirit but performed separately from the safety of our homes.

We chose What A Wonderful World as a validation of this resilience. Written by David Weiss and Bob Thiele, the words and music express gratitude for the wonders of the world and the beauty of life. We sing this song to uplift us, to incentivize us, and to help us get through this challenging time. Our hope is that this song can help to inspire you too.

Over The Rainbow

The song Over The Rainbow, written for the movie The Wizard of Oz, has been voted the most beloved song of all time. It was written by two young Jewish immigrants whose families had escaped the pogroms of Europe during the thirties. The song is about hope for a better life; the subtext is hope for Jewish survival. We chose to sing this song to help and inspire us to get through this pandemic healthy, stronger and committed to a better world.

Community Gala Performances

The Jewish community is large and diverse, but we are unified by liturgical text, emotionally enhanced through song. We love to sing with other choirs in Toronto, unifying, through our love of music, as we spread that joy and enhance spirituality throughout the entire community.

Community Outreach Performances

One of the greatest pleasures of conducting Shir Harmony is building bridges with the larger Toronto community and reaching out to our elderly citizens. As with everyone, music is especially therapeutic to this population, as it stimulates the brain enhancing memories of long ago, while elevating everyone’s spirit and energy. The joyous reaction Shir Harmony always receives is truly inspirational and is a wonderful opportunity to share our mutual love of music with incredibly appreciative audiences.

This song, My Canada My Love, was written by Vern Kennedy, a colleague and friend of Susan Michaels, for Canada’s 150th birthday. It is a love song to Canada.
